Four Canadian Students Attached as ‘Spies’

The photograph above is a press photo taken by the Chicago Tribune on May 14, 1929. The typed noted on the back of the photo reads:

“The four Canadian students at Des Moines University, who were attached by an undergraduate crowd on the charge that they were ‘spies’ trying to further alien propoganda in the school, were given police protection to <sic the> train as they left Des Moines for their homes. The men are John F. Dempster, Frank Smith, Edward Knechtel and Morris Ross.

“Photo shows – the four Canadian students as they passed through Chicago today, May14, on the way home from Des Moines. L to R: – John F. Dempster, Frank Smith, Edward Knechtel and Morris Ross.”
